Federal Way, WA Area Guide

Federal Way is a city in King County, Washington. Federal Way is considered a commuter town by some and is located between Seattle and Tacoma. Its western boundary is Puget Sound. It is bordered by Des Moines on the north, Kent, Auburn, unincorporated King County, and Milton on the east and Tacoma and Fife on the south. Federal Way’s population is approximately 88,580.



History

Federal Way began in the late 1800s as a logging settlement. The name Federal Way was first used in 1929 when five existing schools consolidated operations into School District #210.

In the early 1950's, the name Federal Way was officially adopted by the local Chamber of Commerce. During the 1960's, residential development was growing, providing homes to Boeing engineers and Weyerhaeuser executives.

In the years since incorporation, Federal Way has fostered quality commercial and residential growth, and enhanced the quality of life for its residents with infrastructure improvements, a growing job base, diverse recreational opportunities, and new neighborhood parks. The City's Comprehensive Plan looks to Federal Way's future and includes plans for a more defined City Center, with enhanced mass transportation and mixed-use commercial and residential development in the City's downtown business area

Federal Way has an extensive park system. The area offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities. Inclusive recreation encourages opportunities for people of all abilities to participate and interact in activities together. Federal Way encourages an environment that promotes and fosters physical and social inclusion of people with diverse backgrounds and various skill levels. Activities include trips, social programs, social events, dances theatre, camping trips, cooking classes, arts and crafts, classes, self-advocacy groups, Special Olympics and sports fitness programs.

The Federal Way Symphony was organized in 1960 as the Highline Symphony. The orchestra moved to Federal Way in 1985. It has about 60 paid members, with additional musicians joining the group for some concerts. The symphony plays popular music as well as traditional classical selections
